Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. set-up shop in Clackamas, Oregon in 1990 (originally founded in California in 1988). The initial knives primarily consisted of Bali-Song® knives, using a combination of outside vendors and inside processing to build finished products. And like most companies, starting out meant scarce money and big plans, using second hand equipment and limited resources.
Soon, a natural born fortitude and an undying passion to make the best knives in the world led to significant growth. As the Benchmade product line grew so did our in-house capabilities. We began to acquire new machines and technologies including the first of several lasers, making Benchmade the first knife manufacturer to have such equipment in-house. Open minds and positive attitudes would lead to several more industry firsts over the course of the next several years.
This was only the beginning of Benchmade’s breaking of new ground in the manufactured knife market by using non-traditional materials and modern manufacturing methods in not only building knives better but, inevitably building better knives. The Designer Series was first introduced in 1991 with several custom designs being manufactured. By tapping into the custom knife makers’ knowledge and combining it with our manufacturing expertise we were more readily able to offer more contemporary knife designs and innovations to knife users. Consecutive years of aggressive growth led to the next logical step in 1996 when Benchmade moved into our own 35,000 sq. ft. facility. In 2011, an additional 20,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space was added and the entire factory was awarded the prestigious LEED Gold certification from the Green Building Council.

How should I sharpen and maintain my knife?
Benchmade knives are high-performance cutting tools made from some of the finest materials in the world. Even though we use these select materials it is still important to use proper care and maintenance to ensure optimum performance levels. Always keep your knife blade sharp. A dull knife requires additional force to use and is potentially more dangerous to use than a sharp one. There are a variety of products available when it comes to sharpening your knife. As for which one is best, it pretty much comes down to choosing the one you’re most comfortable with using. Never sharpen your knife on a power-grinding wheel as this can burn the temper out of the blade and weaken its integrity.
Always keep the locking areas of your knife clean- accumulation of dirt or debris could adversely affect the locking mechanism creating a potential safety hazard. To clean these areas we recommend using compressed air to blow out any lose dirt and debris. Then, clean the area with BlueLube cleanser and finish with the BlueLube lubricant.
Most of our blade steels have a very high carbon content which enables them to hold a superior cutting edge. Unfortunately, carbon is also the element that causes rust so, preventive care is required if the knife is used in humid or marine environments. To aid in the cleaning of rust on the blades, we recommend using a fine grade, semi-chrome polish. A product such as marine Tuf-Cloth™ works well to not only wipe down the blade for cleaning but, also adds an invisible coating for added corrosion protection without leaving any oily film which may attract dirt and debris. Lightly lubricate the pivot of the blade periodically to keep it operating smoothly.
Never attempt to use your knife as a screwdriver, pry-bar, chisel, or punch. Never throw your knife. It was not designed for those purposes. Use for any purpose other than cutting is considered abuse and is not covered under the Benchmade Warranty. DO NOT disassemble your Benchmade knife. Disassembly by anyone other than the Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. Warranty/Repair Department will void the warranty! Minimum charge to reassemble your knife is $20.00 plus parts.
LIFETIME LIFESHARP SERVICES WITH EVERY PURCHASE
Each new Benchmade knife is packaged with written documentation of the Benchmade Lifetime Warranty. Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. warrants to the original owner that Benchmade knives purchased from authorized dealers will be free from defects in materials and workmanship. Benchmade will without charge, repair or replace at our (Benchmade’s) option, any knife returned for Warranty work and found to be defective by Benchmade.
The Benchmade Lifetime Warranty only applies to genuine Benchmade products from authorized Benchmade dealers. Knives purchased on the internet through discount websites, mail order outlets, or through any other unauthorized source, and knives which are determined by Benchmade to be counterfeit (see Counterfeit Goods Notice below), are not entitled to our warranty coverage.

COUNTERFEIT GOODS NOTICE
(a) If a knife returned for warranty work is found to be an actual or suspected counterfeit or replica item, Benchmade shall have the right to impound the knife for further investigation of its authenticity. Benchmade shall not be liable to you, or anyone else, for payment of the price of any suspected counterfeit knife under investigation. If Benchmade, in its sole discretion, determines that the knife you returned for repairs is a counterfeit, Benchmade has the right to permanently impound and/or destroy the knife. Knives determined to be counterfeit will not be returned to you.
(b) Benchmade shall have the right to conduct destructive examinations to verify the authenticity of any knife Benchmade receives which it suspects to be counterfeit. Benchmade shall not be liable to you, or anyone else, for the price of any knife destroyed by examination if it is later found to be a counterfeit.
(c) Benchmade’s investigation may include the participation of third parties or governmental investigative agencies as required by law. By sending in your knife for repair, you agree to cooperate in good faith with any investigation conducted by Benchmade, third parties, and/or governmental agencies, including, but not limited to, cooperating with investigations to identify the seller or source of the counterfeit goods by providing the name, location, and other identifying information about the seller.
WHAT IS COVERED
This Warranty covers replacement parts for genuine Benchmade products due to manufacturing defects.
WHAT IS NOT COVERED
This Warranty does not cover normal wear, damage caused by neglect, misuse or the failure to perform normal or necessary maintenance, disassembly of any knife by any person other than Benchmade’s Warranty department, or shipping costs for returned knives.
Do not use your new knife as a screwdriver, pry bar, chisel or punch. Do not throw your knife or use it for any purpose other than cutting. Do not disassemble your knife. Do not sharpen your knife on a power grinding wheel. Any of these acts will void your Warranty. MINIMUM CHARGE TO REASSEMBLE A KNIFE WHEN THE WARRANTY HAS BEEN VOIDED IS $20 PLUS PARTS.
Repair or replacement as provided under this Warranty is the exclusive remedy of the consumer. Benchmade shall not be liable for any incidental, reliance, or consequential damages or breach of implied Warranty on this product, including any damage to person or property. Benchmade’s liability under any circumstances is limited to the purchase price. Some states do not allow exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. This Warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
This knife has only one use, as a cutting tool. Benchmade’s knives carry no warranty except as expressly contained herein. Benchmade disclaims all warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose other than for use as a cutting tool. There are no warranties which extend beyond the description contained herein. Please review the Warranty information and proper knife care instructions provided with each knife.

It seems simple enough. You open the knife, you close the knife. But it’s the mechanics of motion that happens in the process of opening and closing that can make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. Is the knife easy to actuate, can it be opened with one hand, is it ambidextrous, and will it be reliable when you need it most? These are all essential considerations when it comes to knife mechanics.
A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS® has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100 percent ambidextrous design, AXIS® gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar that rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spans the liners and is positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega-style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar its inertia to engage the knife tang. As a result, the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS® bar itself. Available in manual, AXIS® Assist or Auto AXIS® configurations.
Easily opened, quickly and with one hand; this evolution of the AXIS® includes a spring that helps to fire the blade into the open position once the user pushes it beyond a certain point manually. The AXIS® lock also has the added benefit of “suck-back,” which encourages the blade to stay in the closed position. AXIS® Assist knives also feature integrated safety lock systems.
The basic principle is an integral locking bar within the knife liner being stress-bent, enabling it to spring into position behind the rear tang of the blade when the blade is opened. The locking bar wedges against the rear of the blade, locking it open until you physically push it clear and close the blade (locking-liners are made either right- or left-hand specific). And with a modified locking-liner you get a patented feature that helps to enhance the lock function. The function success and function failure of a locking-liner depends greatly on how well it is made and also the quality of the materials used. With Benchmade, you get both.
The monolock mechanism is basically a locking-liner on steroids. The knife liner is one in the same as the knife handle and thus it is designed and made to function as the locking mechanism. Subsequently, a thicker material is used to provide enough surface area to be a functional handle and in turn creates a larger surface area to lock the blade with. If executed properly, the monolock design rates very highly in strength and function.
Built from the framework of the locking-liner with some innovative updates. The lock engages using tensile strength, compared to the compression hold of more traditional locking-liners. With the Nak-Lok®, the possibility of personal injury is greatly reduced with the opening finger never crossing the blade’s path.
Another patented Benchmade exclusive, the Nitrous® boosts the blade with ease. As the blade is closed, the two torsion arms that run the length of the handle liners are secured in place and make contact with the blade tang. As tensioned against the blade tang, the user rotates the blade open to a 30-degree angle, the torsion arms take over and continue the blade opening process on its own. The huge advantage to the Nitrous® design over other similar concepts is that the blade must be rotated open to beyond a 30-degree angle which offers added user control.
As much an art form as it is the ultimate example of form following function. The Bali-Song, or butterfly knife, is of Filipino ancestry dating back to nearly AD 800. Its basic form consists of a pin-hinged, two-piece handle which when closed encases the blade for carry. Opening and closing can be accomplished with a single hand, making the tool that much more utility capable.
Sometimes restricted to Active Duty Military, Law Enforcement and Public Safety, these automatic knives utilize either push-button, slide-release, or dual-action mechanisms. Benchmade autos take full advantage of powerful springs coupled with our precisely machined lock mechanisms, providing the most reliable automatic systems available in the industry. Our patented integrated safety mechanism, located on the handle spine in all push-button automatics, ensures that the blade will not inadvertently deploy or close once it is locked open.
Auto AXIS® — Strong, reliable, fast, and AXIS® lock through and through, this locking mechanism fires the blade open 100% mechanically when the AXIS® bar is pulled downwards. Auto AXIS® also features integrated safety mechanisms and the added safety of “suck-back.”
AXIS® DUAL-ACTION AUTOMATIC
Dual-action knives come in multiple forms, but only one group features the strength and ambidextrous versatility of the AXIS® lock. The AXIS® dual-action automatic mechanism allows the user to open the knife like a regular AXIS®, but there’s a secret. Pull the AXIS® bar further down in its stroke and a spring takes over and fires the blade automatically.
Push the button and the blade fires into the open position. Our push-button mechanisms are not only fast and convenient, they are extremely strong. Most also feature integrated safety mechanisms.
AMBIDEXTROUS PUSH-BUTTON AUTOMATIC
While push-button automatics have traditionally been single sided, Benchmade also has ambidextrous push-button autos that feature push-buttons on both sides.
OUT-THE-FRONT (OTF) AUTOMATIC
Our OTF mechanisms are mechanical masterpieces. Slide the lock button towards the top and the blade fires straight out. Pull the button back to the bottom and the blade returns to the handle.
So what’s it made of? Which blade steel is best? Just a couple of questions we are asked when people see our knives, and the answers come down to this—Benchmade uses a variety of modern materials specially selected for their superior performance characteristics.
We strongly believe that if you’re going to put this much effort into designing a custom quality cutting tool, then it only makes sense to build it of the materials which complement its form and enhance its function. And in some instances it’s more than just selecting a certain material, it’s what we do to it to bring out the extra edge which sets us apart from everyone else. Bottom line, we would much rather overbuild a knife than risk the alternative—we thought you would like that too.
Blade finishes refers to the surface treatment of the blade, which can be anything from the way in which the steel is processed, to a multitude of blade coatings which are applied to the blade itself. We use a variety of finish methods to “dress” our blades.
Satin finish: creates a low-lustre sheen to the blade steel surface. Several common forms of satin finish include:
Stonewash: the blade surface is refined using abrasive tumbling media or “stones” that leave a pronounced random “scratch pattern” on the blade. This finish tends to mask any scratches that may occur with use. Examples- Model 805, 813
Scotchbrite: this finish softly blends the grinding lines on the blade leaving a pleasant “grained” or “brushed” look. Typically the graining pattern goes from spine to edge. Examples- Model 190, 4530
Tumbled or Vibed: similar to a stonewash finish; this finish leaves the blades bright and smooth with a faint random scratch pattern. Examples- Griptilians, Bali-Songs
Burnished: usually applied using non-abrasive media, whether by hand or in vibratory equipment. This finish refines the blade surface without much of a discernible graining or scratch pattern. Examples- Model 770, 941
Hand rubbed: a finish typically done only by custom knife makers, it is similar to a scotchbrite finish with the main exception being that the graining goes from tang to tip.
Polished finish: can be defined as any highly-reflective or glossy finish that refines and smoothes the metal surface. This finish aids in corrosion resistance as microscopic peaks and valleys of the blade surface are smoothed out leaving less surface area exposed.
Bead blast finish: can be defined as any non-reflective finish applied to the metal surface by bead blasting or sand blasting the blade with any of a variety of media. The intent is to roughen the surface for anti-glare. The trade-off is it tends to be more susceptible to corrosion due to the increased surface area exposed. This finish is also commonly referred to as a “military finish”.
When it comes to blade steels, Benchmade not only selects premium grades for their natural qualities, but we also have perfected our own proprietary custom heat treat process which maximizes each steel’s edge toughness and cutting performance.
M390: A super-performance blade steel with exceptional cutting ability and wear resistance. Because of its uniform microstructure and stainless properties, M390 is often used in surgical cutting instruments and other applications that require a high finish.

CPM-M4: Special purpose, high-speed steel with a combination of high carbon, moly, vanadium and tungsten for excellent wear resistance and toughness. A powder-metal, non-stainless steel.
CPM-S30V: An American-made and developed premium grade stainless steel created especially for knives. It is a powder-made steel with a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties. As a blade material, it offers excellent corrosion resistance and superb edge qualities.
CPM-S90V: A unique tool steel, CPM-S90V is a martensitic stainless steel to which vanadium and carbon have been added for superior wear resistance. CPM-S90V offers substantial improvements in wear resistance over 440C and D2, and other high chromium steels, with corrosion resistance equal to or better than 440C.
154CM: An American-made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.
D2: An air-hardened tool steel that offers excellent wear resistance. A good choice for hard use applications.
N680: A chromium-molybdenum conventionally produced stainless steel with the addition of vanadium and nitrogen. Excellent corrosion resistance properties, especially in saltwater. Good hardenability and high obtainable hardness. High wear resistance and ability to preserve keenness.
440C: A high-chromium stainless steel with a terrific balance of good hardness and corrosion resistance. 440C takes a nice edge and is fairly easy to re-sharpen. An excellent value-priced steel for its performance.
DAMASCUS: A specially forged, layered steel made of a variety of steels. It offers remarkable toughness and edge quality. For finishing, the surface layers or lines are exposed through an acid etch which creates a very unique visual effect. Used in special applications due to its inherent high cost and artistic nature.
CERAKOTE™: Designed and manufactured by NIC Industries, Cerakote™ has a unique ceramic structure that outperforms competitive coatings and improves performance in both laboratory and realworld settings.
BK1 ® COATING: BK1 coating is a matte black coating that provides excellent corrosion protection, which exceeds the ASTM-117 spec for saltwater while possessing higher scratch resistance.
BT2 ® COATING: A proprietary blade coating that is Xylan ® based to provide excellent corrosion resistance which exceeds the ASTM-117 spec for saltwater and increases overall surface lubricity.
BP1 COATING: Black Pearl (BP) is a PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating made up of Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN for short). It is a darker, near black, scratch resistant coating with nice decorative qualities.
Tanto: Most tantos seen on the American cutlery market are Americanized formats. Like the Japanese tanto, the Americanized tanto has a high point in-line with the pivot. A flat grind is applied to the point, leaving it very thick and extraordinarily strong. This thick area helps absorb the impact from piercing, as the tanto was originally designed for armor piercing. The front edge meets the bottom edge at an obtuse angle rather than curving to meet it as seen in the Japanese tanto. The only negative aspect of the tanto blade shape is the cutting surface area is sacrificed to gain tip strength.
Drop-point: A slow convex-curved drop in the point characterizes a drop-point blade. This blade format lowers the point for control but adds strength to the tip. It is a very popular blade shape that ranges from a slight drop to a radical downward curve providing endless styles. In fixed blades this blades shape easily sheaths. Usually coupled with plenty of belly for slicing, this format is often used for hunting knives. Drop points are a great all-around blade format.
Clip-point: A clip point is technically a variant of a drop point. Instead of a “slow convex-curve” to lower the point; the profile is “clipped” to bring the point down. Sometimes a concave curve will be referred to as a “clipped point”. This is usually associated with bowie styles.
Sheepsfoot: This blade shape has no point on the tip, very little to no belly and the spine of the blade curves down to meet the edge. It is used in applications where slicing is the main requirement, and a point is either not needed or would actively get in the way. Emergency rescue blades are usually of this design. The lack of a point prevents the rescuer from inadvertently injuring a victim who is being cut free from something restrictive.
Over the years we have developed a “special recipe” for heat-treating our blade steels. This process maximizes the steels’ molecular structure for a custom toughness and Benchmade superior performance. All steels may be created equally, but that is where it stops when it comes to making a Benchmade.
